Mango Crispy Mock “Prawn”

In fact, I was thinking of doing a veg*n version Mango Crispy Chicken, using either mock chicken drumstick or marinated king oyster mushroom and deep-fried. In the end, I used the mock prawn and it is quite similar to one of my earlier recipe Plum Sauce Mock Prawn! The problem is having too many recipes, I lost track of them!

Ok, this is so much simpler! You need to know how to deep-fry and that’s about all. The rest is just mixing the sauce. For Thai Mango Crispy Chicken, the sauce called for sugar, lime juice, fish sauce and chilli. In this recipe, I used plum paste and adding a little bit of tangy taste using orange juice! So, you can always come up with your own sauce or use other sauce like Tangy Orange Sauce!

Preparation: 15 mins

Ingredients (serves 2)
° 8 (200g) vegetarian noodle prawns, deep-fried or pan-fried or baked
° 1- ½ mango, diced
° some mint leaves, for garnish

Sauce
° 2 tablespoons plum paste
° 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
° toasted sesame seeds (optional)
° ½ fresh red chilli, seeded and sliced
° toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Method
1. Mix all the sauce ingredients a bowl and set aside.
2. Arrange the mock prawns, mango and mint leaves on a serving plate.
3. Serve with special plum sauce.

Thank you, Veggie Bun.

I too lazy this time :p, instead of making it, so I used those ready-made with beancurd skin and vegetable.

Cheers :)

Woah it does look delicious. I am a vegetarian myself. But when I order food I usually ask the cook not to put any mock meat. To me it seems pretty artificial and tasted very much MSG. There are also some bad names about mock meat around. So I just wonder is mock meat actually bad for health? Should I avoid it as much as I can? Thanks ^_^

Hi Andrewson

Nice to know another vegetarian and your coments here. I would usually do the same as you did when ordering food, except sometimes I forget to tell the stall. There are some veg*n eateries, does not use mock meat or very limited mock meat. Once a while, I would also pick 1 mock meat dishes when there isn’t much choices available when I go too early to the veg*n stalls.

You are right. In term of health, it is always better to move away from processed food and can food and pick only fresh ingredients or organic foods. And lately, there are some unflavored reports about mock meat in the media. It is individual choice to totally avoid mock meat or use sparingly …

Mostly, I like the mock stuff that used natural ingredients like bean curd skin and veggie (like noodle prawn, mock chicken, mock chicken drumstick, mock meat using mushroom stalks, monkey head mushroom). I do keep some mock fishballs, fish slice or mock mutton, but always limit to 1-2 pcs per person or cut into smaller pieces. Using it to add some texture or to spice up the dish a little bit. Unless, I have the time to make all these using tofu, seaweed, beancurd skin or monkeyhead mushroom.

Mock stuff sometime do contain seasoning which can be MSG, high salt or sugar content, so I don’t over consume, I would then reduce the seasoning (like salt, sugar) used in the dishes.

Cheers : )
